A Trusted Jeans Manufacturer From China Since 2004!

You love the edgy, vintage look of acid wash jeans but find them expensive in stores. You want to try making them yourself but worry that using chemicals like bleach is dangerous and complicated.

Making acid wash jeans1 is a simple DIY project. It involves safely applying a diluted bleach solution2 to your jeans to strip the color in a marbled pattern3, then quickly neutralizing the chemical to set the design.

The acid wash look is a classic in the denim world. I've been running my factory, DiZNEW, for over two decades, and this style always comes back.

In the factory, we have specialized machines that tumble jeans with bleach-soaked stones to get this effect. But you don't need a factory to do it. The core principle is simple: controlled color removal4. The most important part isn't the technique; it's the safety. With the right precautions, you can create an amazing, one-of-a-kind pair of jeans right in your backyard.

How are acid wash jeans really made?

You think "acid wash" involves actual acid, which sounds dangerous. You're not sure what chemicals are used or how they create the iconic marbled effect on the denim.

Acid wash jeans are made by using a chemical, most commonly bleach, to strip the indigo dye from the fabric. To create the pattern, the jeans are crumpled or tied before the bleach is applied unevenly.

Safety gear laid out for a DIY project: nitrile gloves, safety goggles, and an apron

The name "acid wash" is a bit misleading for at-home methods. While factories in the past used strong acids, the modern and DIY version relies on an alkaline chemical: household bleach5 (sodium hypochlorite). The "wash" part comes from the marbled, watery patterns it creates. The entire process is a controlled chemical reaction to remove color. Safety is the most important step.

Without it, you risk damaging your jeans, your property, or yourself. Before you do anything else, you must get your safety gear ready. This is a non-negotiable step.

Here is what you absolutely must have before you start:

Category Items Why It's Crucial
Protection Nitrile gloves, safety goggles, old clothes. Bleach can cause chemical burns to skin and eyes. It will ruin clothes.
Workspace Outdoors or a very well-ventilated area, plastic tarp. Bleach fumes are toxic. Spills will permanently stain surfaces.
Chemicals Household bleach, a bucket, baking soda. Bleach is your lightener. Baking soda is your neutralizer to stop it.

Never mix bleach with other cleaners, especially ammonia, as it creates a toxic gas. Always work with care.

How do you create the acid wash effect?

You have your jeans and your bleach, but you don't know how to apply it. You want to create that classic blotchy, marbled look, not just make your jeans a lighter color.

To get the acid wash effect, first scrunch, tie, or twist your jeans and secure them with rubber bands. Then, spray a 1:1 mixture of bleach and water unevenly over the surface, letting it process for 5-10 minutes.

The trick to a great acid wash is creating high contrast between dark and light areas. If you just soak the jeans in bleach, you'll get a uniform light-blue color.

The patterns come from applying the bleach unevenly to a scrunched-up garment. The folds and creases from the rubber bands act as a resist, protecting parts of the denim from the bleach. This creates the signature marbling.

Step 1: Prep the Jeans

Start with clean, dry jeans. Lay them flat, and then twist and scrunch them into a tight bundle. Use several rubber bands to hold the shape. The tighter you bind them, the more defined your dark and light patterns will be.

Step 2: Apply the Bleach

Mix your bleach and water in a spray bottle. Place your bundled jeans on a protected surface and spray them. Don't soak them completely.

You want to hit the high points of the folds while leaving the inner creases untouched. Rotate the bundle and spray all sides. You will see the color begin to lift almost immediately. This is the art of the process, and you are in full control of the final look.

What are acid wash jeans?

You know the look, but you don't know the name or its history. You want to understand what defines this style and what makes it different from other distressed denim.

Acid wash is a denim finish defined by a high-contrast, marbled or mottled pattern. The look is created by chemically stripping the top layer of indigo dye, leaving a mix of the original dark color and faded white or light blue spots.

This style became a fashion staple in the 1980s and is a perfect example of a rebellious, edgy look. Unlike a simple fade, which mimics natural wear over time, acid wash is intentionally dramatic and artificial-looking. It’s a statement.

In the factory, we achieve this look by tumbling the jeans in large drums with pumice stones soaked in a bleaching agent.

The stones abrade the surface and transfer the chemical, creating that random, stone-like pattern. Your DIY method using a spray bottle on crumpled jeans mimics this process.

You are creating the high points and low points that the stones would. The core idea is the same: unevenly remove color to create a chaotic, high-energy pattern. It’s a finish that says you’re not afraid to stand out.

How do you add the final washed effect to your jeans?

The color on your jeans has lifted perfectly, but now what? You need to know how to stop the bleaching process and wash them correctly to reveal the final design safely.

To finish, you must immediately neutralize the bleach by rinsing the jeans in cold water and soaking them in a baking soda6 bath. After neutralizing, wash them alone in a cold machine cycle with a small amount of detergent.

This final stage is the most critical for the long-term life of your jeans. Bleach doesn't stop working on its own.

If you just let it dry, the chemical will continue to eat away at the cotton fibers until they become brittle and tear. You must neutralize it. This is a step we take very seriously in the factory to ensure garment quality.

1. The Neutralizing Bath

Once you're happy with the level of lightness (after about 5-10 minutes), take the jeans straight to a sink or hose.

While wearing your gloves, rinse them thoroughly with cold water. Remove the rubber bands. Then, submerge them in a bucket of water with one cup of baking soda. Let them soak for at least 15 minutes. The baking soda will completely stop the chemical reaction.

2. The Final Wash

After soaking, wring out the jeans and put them in the washing machine by themselves. A stray bit of bleach could ruin other clothes. Wash them on a cold cycle with a small amount of soap.

3. Dry and Admire

Finally, you can tumble dry them or let them air dry. The heat from the dryer can sometimes enhance the contrast a little. Once they are dry, your custom acid wash jeans are ready to wear.
