A Trusted Jeans Manufacturer From China Since 2004!

You found a great deal at a Banana Republic1 outlet. But a small part of you wonders if the price is just too good to be true.

No, the quality is often different. While some outlet items2 are genuine retail overstock, most products are specifically manufactured for the outlet channel using more cost-effective materials3 and simpler construction to achieve a lower price.

I've been manufacturing clothes for over 20 years. Brands come to my factory with very specific instructions, and those instructions change depending on where the clothes will be sold.

A shirt destined for a full-price retail store gets a different set of rules than one made for an outlet. It’s not about tricking the customer; it's about creating two different products for two different markets.

This is a standard practice in the industry. Let's look at exactly what that means for you when you're shopping.

What Is the Difference Between Banana Republic and Outlet Stores?

You love the Banana Republic style, but the outlet prices are much more attractive. You need to know what the real trade-off is before you buy.

The main difference is the merchandise. Retail stores carry the brand's latest, first-quality collections. Outlet stores sell a mix of true retail leftovers and items made specifically for the outlet channel, which are designed to be sold at a lower price from day one.

In my factory, we see this difference on paper before the first piece of fabric is even cut. A brand will send us two different tech packs for two similar-looking pairs of pants.

The Two Types of Outlet Products

  1. True Overstock: This is the traditional outlet model. These are items that were originally in the main retail stores. They might be from a past season, a returned item in perfect condition, or an over-production of a certain size. The quality of these items is identical to what you'd find in the main store because they came from the same production line. This is the "treasure" you hope to find at an outlet.
  2. Made-for-Outlet: This makes up the vast majority of products in outlets today. Brands design and produce entirely separate lines for their outlet stores. They look very similar in style, but they are built to a lower cost. A brand might tell us to use a cotton-poly blend instead of 100% Pima cotton, to use plastic buttons instead of real horn buttons, or to use a simpler, faster stitching method. The goal is to give the customer the brand's style at a more accessible price point.

Are Outlet Store Clothes the Same Quality?

Outlet malls promise huge savings on brand-name clothing. But you're worried that the clothes you buy there won't hold up after a few washes.

Generally, no. The majority of clothes in modern outlet stores are from "made-for-outlet" lines. They look like the retail versions but are produced using less expensive materials and simpler manufacturing techniques to be sold at a permanently lower price.

This strategy is used by almost every major brand with an outlet presence. It’s a smart business decision that allows them to reach a wider audience without devaluing their main brand.

As a manufacturer, I can tell you exactly where the costs are cut. It’s a game of fractions of a penny that add up over a large production run.

How Quality is Engineered for Price

  • Fabric: This is the biggest one. A retail shirt might use long-staple Pima cotton, which is soft and durable. The outlet version might use a standard, short-staple cotton or a blend with polyester. It feels okay in the store, but it may not be as durable over time.
  • Hardware: Look at the details. The retail version of a jacket might have a heavy-duty YKK zipper and custom metal buttons. The outlet version will likely have a generic zipper and simple plastic buttons.
  • Stitching: We measure stitching in Stitches Per Inch (SPI). A higher SPI count makes a stronger, cleaner seam, but it takes more time and thread. Retail garments often have a higher SPI than their outlet counterparts.
  • Design Details: A complex pocket on a pair of pants might be simplified to a basic slit pocket on the outlet version. This saves time in the sewing line, which saves money.

Is Banana Republic Higher Quality Than Gap?

You're at the mall and see Gap and Banana Republic. They are owned by the same company, Gap Inc.5, but is one brand actually better than the other?

Yes, Banana Republic is consistently positioned as a higher quality, more premium brand than Gap. This is reflected in their choice of materials, more sophisticated designs and tailoring, and a higher retail price point across their main collections.

Think of it like car brands. Toyota and Lexus are made by the same company, but they serve different customers. Lexus is the luxury division. Gap Inc. uses a similar strategy with its brands.

The Gap Inc. Brand Ladder

  • Old Navy: This is the value brand, focused on family basics at the lowest price point.
  • Gap: This is the mid-tier, flagship brand, known for classic, casual American style like denim and logo hoodies. The quality is solid and reliable for everyday wear.
  • Banana Republic: This is the premium "affordable luxury" brand. It targets a more professional or style-conscious customer.

From a manufacturing perspective, the tech packs we receive tell the whole story.

The specifications for a Banana Republic blazer will call for higher-grade materials like merino wool or a silk blend and will have more complex construction, like a full lining and detailed internal pockets.

The tech pack for a similar item from Gap will specify more standard materials and simpler construction to keep it accessible for its target customer. The quality standards and inspections for Banana Republic are also typically stricter.

What Is the Difference Between a Factory Store and an Outlet Store?

You see the terms "factory store" and "outlet store" everywhere. You probably assume they mean the same thing, but you wonder if there's a difference.

Historically, they were different. Today, the terms are used almost interchangeably by brands to describe stores that primarily sell "made-for-outlet6" products. The romance of buying directly from the factory is now mostly a marketing story.

The meaning of these terms has changed completely over the years.

The Original Meanings

  • Factory Store: This was originally a small shop located at the actual manufacturing plant. It sold items directly to the public. The merchandise consisted of "seconds" (items with minor cosmetic flaws), overruns (extra units from a production run), and last season's stock. The quality was identical to the main product, just cheaper due to the circumstances.
  • Outlet Store: This was a retailer, not a manufacturer. They would buy up the overstock from multiple brands and sell it all in one location at a discount.

The Modern Reality

Today, that distinction is gone. The business model shifted from getting rid of a few leftovers to creating a massive, profitable revenue channel.

A modern outlet mall needs a constant supply of new products to fill the shelves. A brand's small amount of overstock isn't nearly enough. So, brands like Banana Republic created "Factory" lines, and the "Banana Republic Factory Store" is simply their name for their outlet store.

The term "factory" is used to make you feel like you're getting a special, direct-from-the-source deal, even when the product was designed and made specifically for that outlet channel from the very beginning.

Conclusion

Outlet quality is often not the same as retail. While you can find genuine overstock, most items are made-for-outlet. Know the difference to be a smarter, more satisfied shopper.
